A European maritime policy: Which activities and what regulations of marine and maritime activities in the Channel area?
The Arc Manche Conference held on 29 March at Rouen the second "Arc Manche Conference" fell within the scope of the official consultation by the European Commission on the Green Paper for an integrated European maritime policy.
the Conference’s objective was to gain a better understanding of some of the main human activities in the Channel (port activities, commercial and recreational shipping, fi sheries, geological and drilling operations etc.), from the point of view of their economic and environmental issues, their interactions/conflicts, and the methods of administration and regulation to which these activities are subject.
Through exchanges between representatives of the European Commission and the French and British Member States, this conference enabled public and private local and regional actors operating in the Channel to set out their expectations with regard to an integrated European maritime policy and to demonstrate, once again, the relevance of the Channel area to the European Union.
It also stimulated trains of thought and new opportunities for Franco-British maritime cooperation so as to favour exchanges of experience and to heighten awareness of concern related to the maritime basin.
The main stakeholders in the Channel area were pleased at the concrete projects developed in the frame of Espace Manche Developement Initiative (EMDI) such as
The target audience is Representatives of coastal local authorities (regions, departments, towns, counties, unitary authorities, cities), associations. Public services, scientific agencies and research centres, observatories, transport operators, town and country planners and any organisation involved in maritime, marine, coastal, harbour (public and private) issues in the Channel.
