Conference 2008

Channel Arc Manche Conference 2008, 3rd December 2008, Folkestone, Kent

The third Channel Arc Manche Conference held on 3 december at the Leas Cliff Hall, Folkestone, was a great success and attracted 100 british and french delegates to discuss how to involve communities in adaptation to climate change in coastal areas. Delegates came from every tier of government from the local to the national level as well as high-level representatives from the European Commission. Alongside these were representatives from a variety of private organizations and universities.

The speaker outlined both scientific evidence and historic environmental events that explained what is, and will continue to be, the impact of climate change on our coastlines and the effect that this will have on its communities. More importantly, discussions took place on what is being done and what actions need to be addressed to tackle these impacts. The recurring theme was how to involve residents in decisions on adaptation to climate change. The conference showed much of the research that has already taken place and highlighted many innovative projects that are under way to help the affected communities deal with future challenges.

The conference also addressed the inpact that the 'credit crunch' would have on the costs involved in the adaptation process. It is estimated that by 2080 there will be additional annual flooding costs of €100-120 bn in Europe, and a 15-fold increase in UK flood costs to £22 bn.

One of the main outcomes of the conference was a unanimous agreement of the need for groups and organisations, on both sides of the Channel, to talk to one another and share their knowledge and experience. Moreover, these exchanges should inform European policies on climate change and on maritime issues. It was the first time that the channel Arc Manche had provided a forum for such a dialogue and this conference has created a way forward for future sharing information, not only between those present but also throughout the netire Channel region.
