Context
The primary objective of the CHARM project is to contribute to an integrated management system for marine research, by the assessment of marine living resources, key species of the Channel and their habitat. The final aim is for this encompassing knowledge of marine species marines to allow for sustainable management of these resources.
The Channel area is, as a matter of fact, a very specific region with characteristic environmental conditions. Deeper understanding of the area will thus enable the preservation of its fragile ecosystem which suffers from major pressure from human activity, for example very intense maritime traffic.
Three phases
The first two phases of the project were co-funded by the ERDF within the framework of the Interreg IIIA programme. They led to a first pluridisciplinary approach of marine living resources management and resulted in an assessment of key species in the Eastern part of the Channel.
CHARM phase 3 is co-funded by the ERDF within the framework of the Interreg IVA France(Channel) England programme, and aims to develop an ecosystemic approach of marine resources management, thus strengthen the pluridisciplnary nature of the work Thus, the study area has been extended to the whole of the Channel and to Southern North Sea, and it includes other subjects such as economics or climatology.
